Well u got shoadowstrike when you got deadly throw and in the expansion as an assasinnatior rogue u ll got about 4 kind of poisons in your daggers/swords/fists/maces.
This skill is roguestyle Whirlwind,but unlike whirlwind not limited.

It's a very nice hability to have, but the heavy cost (50 energy) will make us think twice before using it, at least in PvP situations.

Also the 5y range with multiple enemies is a deathwish for a leather armored fighter...

It's a half decent skill in my opinion, 50 energy seems far too much for such a simple AoE skill that requires a target, I highly doubt I would be using this in PvP.

this will be a very good ability in PvE because till now rogues seemed overwhelmed in raid situations where u have to hit multiple targets (like Felmysts skeletons)... + i rly like the ideea of a rogue AoE .... and btw i dont think u can use this ability unless u have 2 daggers...but i think this completation will come later on... i cant imagine throwing a 2tone mace at some1

First off, I'd just like to say I've been waiting for Blizzard to add this skill to to rogues for a LONG time now, and I'm thrilled that they finaly got around to it :).

That being said, this is probably going to be the skill that rogues would use in helping guildies run low level instances, as (other then combat spec) rogues don't handle multiple mobs too well.

Since this ability requires melee weapons, I would suggest anything BUT daggers, since maximum damage would be achieved with fists, swords, or maces. As a interesting sidenote, for those rogues who are running guildies through instances, you might want to equip a slow off-hand as your poisons won't have much use on low level mobs and this attack does 100% damage of both your weapons. Atm, my weapons at level 70 my weapons would do 630-832, if I equiped a slow offhand I could achieve 1000+ damage, with WotLK, I expect weapons will scale up to 1750-ish. Meaning rogues may have a shot at doing full SM pulls XD.

A strategy for pulling off such a feat would probably be sprint, pull as much as the instance as possible, fan of knives, evasion for half the CD, then another FoK, and that should clear the mobs. Or, if you're sub-spec like I am, you can FoK, evasion, preperation, FoK, then after the evasion wears off use another evasion then FoK. That's 3 FoK, and very little damage to you.

If your weapons equal an average of 1750 damage when you're level 80 and have lovely WotLK weapons, you might even be able to clear all the mobs you pulled with FoK, evasion, FoK, and then you can save your preperation to restore FoK when you get to the boss in SM. I'd love to see a video of a rogue doing a SM run in less then 2 mins ^.^

For those of you that don't belong to leveling guilds or twink guilds where you are often asked to run people through instances, this post will mean little if anything to you :P

If they add a animation where I spin like a bladmaster using whirlwind and hundreds of knives fly out from me like a fountain of knives, I will love this game forever :D

edit: Changed all the FoN to FoK, just so people don't think I'm illiterate :P (you thought paladins "bubbling" was odd, just imagine when people start saying "That rogue loves to FoK")

I'm likin the idea of sneakin in on a group of 4 or 5 allies, opening on healer with garrote, performing murder spree, than fan of knives, vanish, re-open on healer, blade flurry + SnD, and probably have 2 or 3 dead. I wonder if fan of knives will proc sword or mace specialization? (Just think of a 5v5, rogues vs whatever, each starting the opener on a different person. I assume rogues can't be targeted while on murder spree (trapped maybe?))

Assassination spec doesn't seem too bad either. Deadly brew + Infectious poisons + Imp Poisons + cold blood + fan of knives doesnt sound too bad either. I'm assuming fan of knives will be able to crit and a guaranteed crit with this sounds great. Maybe use a macro to equip 2 high damage weapons whenever using this ability then switch back to daggers? (just remember to keep these weapons poisoned for best effect)

My only problem with this ability is that it is heavily, heavily weighted towards users of big slow weapons, essentially leaving Dagger rogues (again) in the lurch when it comes to AoEs.

Blade Flurry now hits more targets. Murder Spree hits two targets, and fan of knives is essentially an AoE designed for "big damage" weapons.

Here I thought blizzard was making a push to make daggers viable?

anyone else besides me look at the range and kind of scratch your heads at it?

Ive seen plenty of old kung-fu movies, and in every one of them an ordinary ninja or samurei could throw their weapons (regardless of size, daggers, swords or both) much further than 8 yrds? i know thats 40 feet but, god damn... youre a L80 rogue! youve mastered everything there is to know and you cant tell me you'd think throwing your melee weapons (only 2 of them) 8 yrds will be effective?

i hope blizz changes this so its thrown weapons and not melee ones. hell, i say make it into a finishing move and give it the same effect as deadly throw except no slowing or spell interrupt. or keep the CD and give them those. thatd be a nice endgame move for a rogue, a mass interrupt and slow move with a 1 min CD and a moderately high energy cost.

but as it is now, its only good to keep peeps off of the AB and EotS flags.

Very nice for raids aswell. No longer will rogues have to sit and wait for aoe groups to be gone. Now they can actually do dmg. Blizz giving all classes a pve aoe ability it seems (warrior whirlwind, priest mind sear or something)

Reguardless of running lowbies in an instance you will still want 2 slow weapons when using this. Having a macro that swaps ur weapons then casts then swaps back will be very useful. When it comes to aoeing this in addition to Murder Spree will be a devistating blow.

and i dont understand why throwing ur MH weapons will be such an awful thing. Compare the dmg of your throw weapon to ur the dmg of your MH and OH. The dmg will be much more if your gunna change it to throw make the dmg increase 200% or somthing.

Its an instant cast that hits all targets with a potential range of 13 yds. hit a target at max range 5yd then hit all enemies in an 8 yd range of the center 13yd away. Then your weapons return. Again its instant and no metion of a delay. So from what I can see there will be no issue with using this using ur MH and OH

It all depends, my dear BE rogue, on your point allocation - will combat be the PvP build in Wrath? You will need 38 points in combat to get the 100% silence.

Who knows until we test them all - but I certainly like the thought of Killing Spree for PvP, though how to keep the attacks focused on a single target will be the challenge - imagine CS+KS on a single target? Now that is QQ from anyone. Man this is going to be fun times for all use rogues trying the new talents and builds!

I see lots of people talking about what will be the new rogue pvp builds will be, but if you look really well at every tree you can see that they all have aspects of both pve and pvp. It seems to me that blizz is making it so people dont need to respec back to pve after doing arena's or vise versa. Rather you can do both, raid and pvp, in any tree very well.

To be honest, it looks like they are finally making ALL talent specs viable for PvP. It boils down to preference, playstyle, and most used skills, and thats how you should spec.

They are even making healing builds more pvp oriented. This was very obvious with druids... Trees, I see trees in PvP now. No speed reduction, increased armor, a 6% base healing instead of spirit based increase (cause blizz doesn't want to give spirit on PvP gear for priests and druids, idk why).

Exellent changes, just excellent, Blizzard is on key.

This skill seems perfect. Besides the obvious Tricks of the trade>Fan of Knives pulling tactic think about the whole "whoops i forgot these guys aoe'd and i'm unstealthed." Now you can chose to start in generating your combo points and try to catch up on doin your job or pop FoK and cut down everyone a nice bit to help cover up your folly.

With upcoming 3.0.4 changes, the CD will be gone - it'll now be determined purely by our energy pool (5 seconds to regen 50 energy if you're not combat). Also, a change will be made so that daggers are viable with this move

So just checking, but does this spell have a "damage cap" ? I've heard about some spells (like Warlock or Mage AoE) have a maximum "DPS" for all the mobs they're hitting? So if there's a hypothetical 10000 enemies in the AoE, they might only take 20 damage/second each? The reason I ask is because most other "physical AoE" like Whirlwind have a limited number of targets right on the tooltip, this doesn't seem to have that.

finally getting some Rogue AoE and as of Patch 3.0.8 the Cooldown on Fan of Knives has been removed. if you dont have better forms of AoE DPS, by popping Adrenaline Rush you can practically spam it to take down annoying adds in instances. i know i love using this move in PvP whenever hunter uses Snake Trap or if a Death Knight's Bloodworms spawn

Unfortunately the animation is a group of general dagger-looking knives instead of the actual models of what you have equipped. Maybe in the future they will update it to match, but since it's so fast I'm surprised what is shown actually had a model and texture to begin with.

It is very important to note that Fan of Knives has a chance to proc any poisons that may be on your weapons (ex. Deadly, Cripp, Wound)

Today I equipped dual crippling poisons during a heroic Gluth fight in naxx and used this ability to land a kind of 'mass snare'...albeit the nature of this effect makes it unreliable and generally random, it turned out to snare quite a number of the mofo's allowing us to seal a win from what was otherwise terribad PuG kiters.

Fan of Knives is affected by Blade Flurry, but only the attacks from throwing your main hand will carry over. I discovered this myself when I went through my combat log out of curiosity.

Here's what it looked like. There were two worgs of the same type.

You can now cast Fan of Knives without having a target. This allows for things such as getting rogues out of stealth after a vanish or a mage after using invisibility, allowing for some pretty nifty tricks against other rogues or mages (if you have that much energy left at the time, since the ability itself is quite costly at the moment. Breaking vanish/invisibility is almost priceless, though).
Atleast to me, this makes the ability more appealing, and it has most definetely earned a place on my action bar.
Since this depends on weapon damage, as it is right now, it is more useful with slow weapons rather than fast ones, but I read there was currently discussions about how this could be improved for rogues using daggers.

After patch it seems Combat Daggers (this post is PURELY for discussion) would benefit the most from the 150% increase; it deals MORE damage than an equivalent sword weapon.

From what I have sitting in my pack, Silent Crusader / Widow's Fury combo a FoK would deal:
MH: 860-1096
OH: 412-526

Since it's 100% weapon damage those numbers are taken straight from character sheet. (AP omitted for the simplification of math)

An Anarchy / Rolfsen's Ripper combo would be:
MH: 644-758 -> 150% -> 966-1137
OH: 424-535 -> 150% -> 636-802.5

Those weapons mentioned with the exception of Rolfsen's Ripper(143.4) are 156 DPS.

Fancy your tastes, for a Slow/Fast combat daggers combo (Anarchy / Librarian's Paper Cutter)

MH: 633-747 -> 150% -> 949.9-1120.5
OH: 322-374 -> 150% -> 483-561

The numbers above show what I personally take away as FoK as a skill FAVORS Slow/Slow combat daggers.

Specced deep into combat and with thrown specialization the rogue gains a unique spell locking ability in fights such as the mage boss in Nexus or trash mobs prior Grand Widow Faelina, with respectable AoE to boot.

It would also likely beat a mage's AoE damage in terms of burst value with 120 energy.

With Mutilate specced It has 159% damage.
This ability is awesome boosting tool. Had a few buddies boosted through Uldaman. At first I though I would have some problem with multiple mobs as I am Mutilate specced. In the end I boosted even faster than with Blade Flurry/Killing spree. Here's what I did: Sprint, Evasion (if doing a massive pull), gather the mobs and FoK them to death.

Confirmed on the poison spreading. Its good to use with combat spec if you have Savage Combat. It poisons and increases physical dps. Very helpful with Anub'Rekhan and other bosses that spawn adds

My Rouge now get called in for Gluth on all guild runs, to run around spamming FoK on the cows.

and its nice feels like Blizz actuly made that encounter just for us rouges to get something to do other than look up the behind of BIG nasty watching Cycles ;)

one thing just rember to bring some evasion gear is nice to up that dodge rating and some other gear with speed that makes you run a bit faster because the debuff can have some nasty effects if they hit you to much.

1 button aoe, spammable WW that also poisons... as long as there is at least 3 targets, it would be less dps to do anything else, its like around 800-1000dps per target

should be using tricks of the trade with this, pretty much doing the tanks job for them on pulls

it also shows up as 106/159% (non-dagger/dagger) with find weakness

each individual crit does count for the +2 energy for focused attacks, and a nice spam if you have energy gains on with scrolling combat text... it also seems to be affected by BF to an extent which is amazing considering this attack pretty much outdps'es anyone on aoe dps untalented except for unholy dks and fire mages who love to spam flamestrike lol

the glyph also seems additive and not multiplicative with the talent as well, just with the base damage, tool tip shows either 120/180% as combat/sub, 126/189% as assassination... it is one of the better glyphs but usually ends up being not one of the 3 best for most specs (usually go with mut being mut/hfb/rupt, combat being ss/ar/ks, hat being evis/rupt/snd, though i guess combat would be the easiest to fit it in over AR)

Very useful (and needed) skill for rogues which serves many purposes.

It gives you the chance of getting a rogue that is stealthed or vanished out of stealth.

You can use this skill to aoe snare to either give u some kiting room or to snare other people that arent in melee hit/shiv range to kite/give your healer or partner time to reset.

haven't really tested this out yet, but speccing into FoK in combat will make you very annoying in 5s with the aoe interrupt and sometimes even in 3s.

I just want to make something clear. Because of the upcoming nerf to FoK (from 100% weapon damage to 70%), I have heard nothing but
"Woohoo! Rogues aren't going to top DPS anymore with an OP ability!"
Now, this irritates me. I may do the most DPS on a trash pull guys... But that's because I have good weapons. If I were to have weapons which weren't near-BiS, you wouldn't see it so high. The idea is that this ability is better with better weapons.

To reiterate, Fan of Knives does proc the Assassination talent Focused Attacks, but does NOT proc the Combat talent Combat Potency. In addition, combat rogues are much much much less likely to use daggers as the main hand weapon (as backstab combat specs are dead). For AoE, Assassination (Mut) > Combat. For single-target, Assassination > Combat. From a combat rogue, THANKS BLIZZARD.

In patch 4.0, this ability will use the weapon in the ranged slot. It is to be assumed that it will require a thrown weapon to allow usage, meaning there would be little reason for rogues to carry guns and bows in end-game content.

Remember that you can still auto attack with your regular melee attacks while FoKing. This can be useful for Focused Attacks, and Combat Potency which will give you more energy for FoKing* aswell as slightly more damage from melee.

As of 4.0 this is now based on THROWN weapon damage and you can NOT use this ability unless one is equipped. So now rogues will be less likely to be rolling on hunter weapons unless they like to switch back and forth for trash and boss.

Also a poison can be added to thrown weapon (amazing benefits for PvP). So pick you poison carefully. I tend to think Instant Poison will be best, but the stacks of Deadly may overcome my suspicions.

Can someone explain how this interacts with Vile Poisons? It looks to me like if you have Instant on your MH, Deadly on your OH, and, oh I don't know Crippling on your thrown, you'd have a seperate chance of applying each of those 3 poisons every time you hit FoK, which seems really overpowered to me. Has there been any testing on this yet?

I'd like to point out Combat's bonus from Ambidexterity, wich not only increases OH damage by 75%, but the thrown weap dmg as well(just made this account for this comment, no idea how to link skills). I don't have FoK myself (yet) but i suppose it should at least outdamage sub's FoK because of this.

Don't know if anybody pointed this out but with fan of knives you will actually see a replica of your throwing weapon flying to every enemy you hit. Makes me love it even more.

As of 4.3 Combat Rogues can no longer use Fan of Knives during Killing Spree.

It was listed nowhere in the patch notes that they did this themselves, so it was originally a bug or the ability is currently broken from being used during the action. Combat Rogues have had the option to do this since 3.3.5 to prevent energy capping in awkward situations when Killing Spree was performed or to waste excess energy for quicker burst DPS.

Now I have no clue what is going on with it.. <.<

In Mists beta, Fan of Knives grants a combo point. As a side effect, Fan of Knives now requires a target, and can't be spammed like it used to. No more spamming by the auction house, on the bank steps, or while dancing on the mailbox (unless you can target a rat or Gamon).

NOTE: Although this post contains useful information about the new Fan of Knives for MoP, I am using it to show rogues how more powerful it is with the legendaries (which will soon be gone within a month being replaced by some quest green I'm sure)

If you have legendaries at the moment, you'll love the new Fan of Knives for trash.

1) You should know now that Fan of Knives now grants a combo point per use ONLY IF you have an enemy target, so don't forget that.
2) Fan of Knives applies your weapons' poisons at the same rate.

Now, number 2 is the reason why AoE is ridiculous with the legendaries.

You already should be using Deadly Poison for your lethal poison. Now, for each enemy you hit with Fan of Knives, it applies Deadly Poison(not 100%) but pretty frequently. Deadly Poison only stacks ONE time now and any poison application after just deals straight damage. Of course once you reach 5 combo points, use Crimson Tempest (new AOE "finisher"). SOOOO, after all those enemies already have a stack of Deadly Poison, FoKing afterward just throws out multiple damage hits, EACH OF WHICH seems to give a stack of your legendaires' Combat Trance (stacking agility buff). So while FoKing a mob of like 3 enemies, you gain like 3-5 stacks of Shadow Trance per FoK use. So in like 10 seconds you can reach between 30-50 stacks and have them proc your WINGS. At that point, u can spam 5 point Crimson Tempest (new AoE "finisher") until your daggers proc runs up.

Rinse and repeat.

It's worth noting that this ability "Awards 1 combo points if it strikes your current combo target." Note that it's "combo target" rather than "target"

This means that if you were to, for instance, put one combo point on a mob (or target dummy, for testing) and then switch targets and start spamming Fan of Knives, additional combo points would continue to accumulate but only on that first dummy. You'd be able to spend them with a finishing move, but you won't be able to see how many points you have on your current target.

I'm saddened that this spell doesn't get added sooner in a rogue's arsenal. Around level 30 or 40 would be perfect, since being locked into combat spec for an AoE until 66 is a bummer.
Also, as you may have guessed FoK is effected by Shadow Focus, costing 9 energy in stealth. It'll let you get more sprays in one energy bar.
