Each spell or attack that lands consumes 1 bone.

Does that mean spells or attacks used BY the caster, or AGAINST him?

this kinda has a high cooldown i think personaly for fighting spell caster's this good move and if you no when they gona use a powerfull move also good but from just plain melee this probly be gone in few sec's i think they should maybe give this ability to not proc from melee more then once every 5 sec's or something and reduce melee dmg if proced from melee, for 3 sec's since fast hiter's have this off in a sec and wont be worth puting up but i may be wrong

Anyone know if aoe effects remove bones? If not then then this will be interesting in that it is the only oh snap button/cooldown that scales with avoidance. Divine Protection and druid Berserking have fixed durations, this will protect you longer if you dodge/parry more while its up. This does all depend on aoes not removing the bones though.

Bone Shield has a 2 second hidden cooldown for the charges. If you get hit twice in 2 seconds it will only consume one bone. Not sure if both attacks have their dmg reduced or if its just the attack that consumes the charge.

okay.. i'm still overthinking my unholy build for wednesday night and i always read the opinion of a few people, that this skill is one of the best for more damage done and less damage taken. sure, it IS an interesting skill and it HAS its benefits, but it has this awful 60 seconds cooldown.

i played around with it a bit on the beta realms and after a few seconds (i engage two or maybe three mobs most of the time) all the charges were gone and i hat 40+ seconds cooldown to recast it. if it really were like water shield, i wouldn't mind. but since it isn't and even the glyph doesn't help the skill but adding a fifth charge, i can't really see a well invested talent point here.

is there maybe someone who could help me with my pondering? : )

Yes! Diablo 2 reference!

I had a PnB(Poison and Bone) necromancer and this skill was usually a life saver. Conversely, it also meant that if it runs out then I had to recast it immediately or die horribly and soon.

DKs are much tougher than squishy Necromancers, so they can hold their own, but this ability still seems like it helps.

What I would like to see are more D2 necromancer references! I'd die happy if Bone Spear was in WoW, that skill was awesome...

FYI, it seems that DoT effects don't use charges, but still have their damage reduced. I am only sure about physical DoTs (bleeds) however. It would be much appreciated if someone could check this for magical DoT effects.

Our reason for most of these changes should be obvious, but some common themes are:

* Making tanking still rely on cooldowns, but rely on them a little less.

Bone Shield -- mitigation reduced from 40% to 20%.

But, it is important to note that this is simply to eliminate the cooldown-basis, as they are also changing this:

7) Frost Presence -- bonus armor increased from 60 to 80% and magic damage reduction increased from 5 to 15%. We wanted to reduce the effectiveness of cooldowns but bring up base mitigation to reduce damage spikiness.

If you are tanking, FP should ALWAYS be up. This means that that 20% from Bone Shield is being made passive. So it is actually a BUFF overall, even though it is a nerf to the single ability. It still gives the damage boost though. Now, you get 20% passive boost with an additional 20% boost for 30~ seconds (with proper tanking gear, making it better than just 40% for 30 seconds).

This also shows from the change to IF:

6) Icebound Fortitude – now reduces damage by 20% instead of 50%. The amount of damage reduced increases with bonus Defense (to about 35% for 540 Defense, but it can go higher). The stun immunity is intended to be its primary role in PvP.

This is actually a buff as well, despite the flat drop of 30% mitigation. All tanks should have 540 Defense (if not more for more avoidance) to be uncrittable. This means a loss of 15% mitigation while it is up. But, this is also further buffed by the proc on the new DK tanking sigil, which has a chance to increase Defense rating (Bad for reaching the cap, good for further mitigation).

So, DKs are getting BUFFED next patch:

Additional 20% passive reduction while IP is up (whenever tanking).
Additional 20% for 30 seconds (with good gear) while BS is up.
Additional 35+% for 12 seconds while IF is up (standard+ gear).

Over:

40% for 30 seconds.
50% for 12 seconds.

Is it still worth having this talent in a pure PvE raid spec? i mean i wouldnt personally refresh this talent midfight to waste a rune that could be useful in other ways of DPS.

This ability is very difficult to fit in a rotation for a DK, because you need an unholy rune to activate it, and in the middle of a combat... you know...

A question was asked on the forum as to if the damage reduction (20%) affects damage shields like PW:S and Blood Shield.

The answer is yes.

In 4.3, bone shield will change a bit. Instead of reducing a charge every time you are hit, it will reduce a charge everytime you get hit for x% of your hp.

Our idea is that Bone Shield would expend a charge to dampen those spikes specifically.

NOTE: They also say it might not happen :(
I personally hope they do as getting hit for tiny ammounts of damage reducing your charges is kinda stupid :p

EDIT: Will not happen for 4.3.
The charges will change to 6 up from 4 tho :)

Bone shield is not on global cooldown, so you can add it to a macro you use frequently, like heart strike, to recast it on every cooldown:

Probably obvious, but you should use this in the "waiting room" for challenge modes so the cd is up again before the gate opens.
