This will be the new 51-point talent spell in the Mage's Fire tree when the Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack is released. The Arcane talent spell will be called Arcane Barrage, and the Frost spell is called Deep Freeze. They can be seen in the Talent Calculator for WotLK.

Please note that this is subject to change. WotLK in still in beta and the designed can still change it, something they hopefully will. Having played a mage for a year now, this talent looks far from impressive, to say the very least.

comments are a bit short sighted here, look at the new fire talents along with this one, using this then blast wave along with dragon breath then the explosion going off will make world in flames and hot streak come into play.

Mages rejoice (until the spell is changed again) as currently the spell targets an enemy, much like SoC. With a little luck, the days of melee range AoE are drawing to a close somewhat.

Compared to our other talented AoE's the mana cost appears quite reasonable too.

So it basically is a seed of corruption for mages now: your target gains a DoT and after it wears of (or is dispelled) all enemies in the neighbourhood get damage.

Combined with Burnout, using this spell on large groups of mobs WILL burn extra mana for EVERY crit that occurs. Be wary.

However the damage is phenomenal.

My Mage's gear sucks, but with around 600~ spell damage I'm seeing hits of 800 and crits of 1.4k~ before Ignite with this.

Note that each tick can crit and is Direct Damage.

Currently on the Beta Realms, each tick also provides knockback making this a devastating CC as well. (can't move / cast while flying through the air and it's doing 800-1.4k / 3seconds)

But it is not very mana efficient.

This is alot like the locks seed of corruption... I play a lock and in greens from NR Ive seen Soc crit for about 2-3k on repeatedly due to it ticking on like 5 mobs.
Is it just me or is it strange that warlocks get a better version of this spell at lvl 70 without talents that can be cast on multiple targets?

As of patch 4.0.1 this spell won't explode if dispelled and it can be refreshed before it has run out (refreshing it won't cause it to explode). In short, it will only explode if it's allowed to run its full duration.

This makes fire the best spec for farming. It has a longer range and deals more damage than any other instant-cast mage spell that doesn't depend on a proc or have a cooldown. With three targets, it deals more damage while I'm busy looting than my Water Elemental would deal, plus I don't have to worry about my pet killing a mob before I've tagged it.

A few notes on mechanics:

- Each tick can hit for normal damage or crit for double damage

- Haste will speed up your tick rate, and may lengthen the total duration so that you get your extra tick's worth. For example, I have 12.5% haste, which results in me getting 5 ticks of LB damage over 13.33 seconds

- The explosion at the end can hit your original target. For example, if I fight a single mob that is out of range of anything else, I will get 5 ticks of dot damage + 1 hit of direct damage.

The explosion at the end WILL break polymorph on nearby mobs; this can be avoided by refreshing Living Bomb before it completes its duration.

With regard to Impact procs, the 3 target maximum means that Impact will potentially remove Living Bomb from currently affected targets in order to spread the effect to others. Also, since 4.2.0:

When Impact spreads Living Bomb, it will only be spread to two additional targets. The net effect is that if the mage's most recent Living Bomb target is the same as their Impact target, that target will no longer lose the Living Bomb effect. If Living Bomb is active on multiple targets when the Impact effect is cast, Living Bomb will remain active on the most recent Living Bomb target, and will be added to two other nearby targets.

These tooltips contradict each other. Is it +26% of SP over 12 seconds, or +26% of SP every 3 seconds?

Changes for Mists of Pandaria:
(Tested in patch 5.0.5)

If you refresh Living Bomb just before its last tick, it will still explode (but the last tick will be skipped). If you refresh it with two or more ticks remaining, it will not explode.
If the mob dies, the Living Bomb will explode in all cases.
If you cast a 4th Living Bomb, the Living Bomb that's removed from your earlier targets does not explode even if it's on its last tick.

This means that it is a slight increase in single target DPS when you refresh the Living Bomb just after its second-to-last tick, because the explosion happening sooner will more than offset the last tick being lost(*). It will cost more mana however.

In AoE situations with many mobs close to each other, it makes sense to place Living Bomb on targets that will die soon for a higher number of explosions.

(*) For instance, if I take off some haste to have 4 ticks, my Living Bomb normally does 10,684 damage over 10.7 seconds plus 10,737 when exploding, for 2002 dps. When refreshed right after the 3rd tick at 8.1 seconds, it has ticked for 8013 damage plus 10,737 from the explosion, for 2314 dps. The break-even point is at 9.4 seconds or about half-way between the two ticks. So if you wait more than a half tick before refreshing, it's a slight dps loss again and in that case it's worth waiting for the last tick to complete before refreshing. With more haste and a 5 tick living bomb the numbers are similar, though the break-even point happens sooner. Either way, it doesn't really make that much of a difference whether you wait for the last tick or refresh it a second early.

For a frost mage, personally I believe Frost Bomb is a better choice. Even on single target. Here's why.

Frost mage is all about reliability. Our DPS is reliable, there is ZERO impact on our DPS from RNG (other than trinket procs of course).

The brain freeze procs from Living Bomb bring an element of RNG to the frost mage. Whilst you might get 3 procs from one Living Bomb, you might actually get none. And on a boss pull, RNG will more than likely screw up your pull. You might get 4 in one bomb, but you didn't have enough GCD downtime to spend the brain freeze so 2 procs could occur before you spent the first, meaning you've lost a brain freeze proc or two.

Frost bomb is reliable, it's on a fixed cooldown and GUARANTEES a brain freeze proc. Why is this beneficial? Because you can factor and build the proc into your rotation, you can guarantee (if you have the tier bonus) that your buffed 20% ice lance will hit whilst your trinkets are up, and you can guarantee a brain freeze proc when you're ready to pop Alter Time. Also, because as a Frost Mage we stack haste, the cooldown on Frost Bomb is reduced dramatically to around 6 seconds, meaning you are guaranteed a brain freeze proc every 6 seconds. You simply cannot achieve that consistency with the other bombs.

Sorry but I don't do stats and math. This to me is just common sense and how things pan out during real game play.

For Cata Classic: Refreshing Living Bomb before its final tick will no longer cause it to lose a tick, but it will still not explode. Like Wrath, you should still continue let it expire instead of clipping the explosion.
